Pulaski Day Parade 2005

The 2005 Pulaski Day Parade was held today on Harlem Rd. in Cheektowaga NY. I had the pleasure of attending with Sr. Rose and Sr. Johnice. We met up with Fr. Thad who was marching in the Parade.

Sr. Johnice was met by everyone it seems including the passing polka bands on the floats as they yelled "Hello Sr. Johnice" in time with the polka beat!

As almost custom (I was told) it rained passing showers that really were a relief for the humid heat. But the sun returned just in time for the majority of the parade.

Sr. Johnice brought an extra umbrella that I thankfully used. As I stood there Sr. Johnice was pointing out the many volunteers that have or had worked at the RTLC through out the years, both in the audience and marching. It really is an extraordinary extended family that is involved with the Center. The entertainment, music and even the politicians were fun to watch.

Even on this day of relaxation and entertainment Sr. Johnice was determined to be at her best mingling with people that can help make a difference in the lives of the people she works so hard for.

The Response To Love Center is scheduled to open on this Tuesday the 19th of July for the Poverty Awareness Program. The Center will be open on Tuesday - Wednesday - Thursday until August 11, 2005.

Summer Break Is Busy!
by Mike Gilhooly 07-04-2005

This summer break at the Response To Love Center has brought some much needed and very ambitious changes and updates to the building.

A major capitol improvement in the building includes the removal of the old wooden covers along the base window openings, and installation of secure, beautiful and functional glass block windows.

It is amazing how much more light and cross ventilation is now available in the basement. This also serves to prevent a rodent problem that has been ongoing.

The project is almost complete, just the Rother Ave side of the building is left to complete.

In addition to the exterior improvements a lot of work is being done on the 3rd floor converting old storage space into a new and much needed health and wellness center.

The workers are laboring in record heat and humidity but are steadfast in their commitment to completing this project on time. I am humbled by their attitude to forge ahead regardless of their working conditions.

This Wellness Center is a labor of love for a community that has been forgotten and dismissed in the current county fiscal crisis.

Sr. Johnice has secured some of the medical equipment needed and is actively pursuing other avenues of procurement.

Sr. has also lined up medical volunteers to help staff this center.

This Center will provide basic health services such as flu shots, weight and diet control assistance, blood pressure screening and child wellness, including preventative health care saving the taxpayers untold amounts of money.

God Bless this effort and may the good work of the Response To Love Center Continue!

An Afternoon With Heroes
by Mike Gilhooly 06-02-2005

Thursday the second of June I had the pleasure of being in the midst of heroes. It was the Response To Love Center Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. With more than 100 people from every walk of life, from all different areas of WNY in attendance.

The people that make the mission run, got together to celebrate the continued success of the St. Adalbert's Response To Love Center. Director Sr. M. Johnice and the staff of Felician and Mercy Sisters are working miracles every day. With the help of some local businesses like the Broadway Market, Wahl's Candies, Adams Steak & Seafood Restaurant, CakeArt.com and more they are able to continue the good works of charity so necessary in the impoverished area they serve.

News of remodeling and expansion with the addition of a Health and Wellness Clinic takes the Center to new and challenging heights. The Center having just added a GED and Computer Learning Center just months ago, has proved that it is not waiting for someone to do something, they already have 4 graduates and half of those are going on to Erie Community College! All this while their budget was slashed by $55,000 this year, in light of the current Erie County fiscal problems.

Broadway Market Easter Holiday Kick-Off 2005 A Huge Success!

The Broadway Market hosted the "Easter Holiday Kickoff 2005" at a ribbon cutting ceremony at noon, on Friday, March 11th. Spearheaded by Executive Director, Dick Fronczak and the board of Directors the focus being a response to the East Side Community. Master of Ceremonies for the event was WGRZ, Weatherman, Kevin O'Connell. Invited guests were, Political Officials, Community and Church Leaders, Representatives from many organizations and Agencies in the area.

This year's holiday season was a remembrance and support to the East Side population served at St. Adalbert's Response To Love Center. It is in this center that people are fed, clothed and educated. In the dining site, nourishing meals are served, the food pantry provides a bag of groceries on a monthly basis, clothing is purchased at bargain prices, and students are taught in a GED and computer program.

With recent cutbacks, Felician Sister and Director of the Center, Sister Mary Johnice Rzadkiewicz remains optimistic and hopeful believing in the mission God has given. "With God on our side and the willing hands and hearts for the Felician Sister Team, Mercy Sisters, Volunteers, Americorps and Youth Groups, we will continue our ministry to the people of the East Side!" Recent cutbacks have brought to light the need for the Broadway Market to respond.

In a Weeklong Journey of Togetherness, the Broadway Market and Saint Adalbert's Response To Love Center provided Volunteers, Eagle and Scout Troops to be on hand to direct traffic, carried groceries to customers cars, and assisted in the Market when needed.

"Sister's School" offers GEDs for East Side community

by Mark Ciemcioch Staff Reporter

With a large number of people living on the East Side of Buffalo that don't have a high school diploma or equivalent degree, St. Adalbert's Response To Love Center came to the table with another response late last year.
"Sister's School" began a partnership with the Buffalo Board of Education and the Erie County Department of Social Services to hold a class to teach those in need of obtaining a general equivalency diploma.

According to the 2000 Census 42 percent of the people living in the area over the age of 25 do not have a high school diploma or GED.

Sister M Johnice Rzadkiewicz, CSSF, Director of the center, said that there is a great need for such a program on the East Side. "We found out that many of the people that are coming into the center do not have high school equivalency at all," she said. "Some of the students coming here haven't even completed the sixth grade."

The program began in October of last year (2004) as teacher Catlin Denecke began instructing a class of 15 people. Sister Johnice wanted to avoid a strictly GED program-type title, as it may cause potential students to skip class because they were embarrassed to be affiliated with a GED program.

That's where the name "Sister's School" originated. In November the program opened a second class for basic computer training with a room of 32 computers. Twenty-nine students are currently enrolled. Educators are working on installing DSL direct connections to the Internet, using America Online as a browser, to teach participants about every resource available on computers.

Sr. Mary Johnice GED Certification Classes

The program is set up during the day, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to noon. The scheduling also allows students to receive breakfast and lunch at the center.

"It's really an outreach to a community where there's a heavy need." Sister Johnice said. "Literacy is a top priority that we are pushing. Our whole program is based on self-sufficiency. We did not want to set the center up so we would just be a place of handouts."

The program now has 19 people enrolled in the GED class, although not all of the students show up every day due to appointments and other commitments. Four students have graduated with GEDs and have gone on to enroll at Erie Community College. Another student is close to completion of her studies. Sister Johnice is pleased with the results.

"You may not always have 19 people, but you have 10 or 12 people in so it's a good number," she said. "One of the difficulties we run into is that the people are not used to structure, so we have to teach them. this is how you dress, this is how you come prepared for school. Punctuality is also very important as well."

As of right now the classes are focused on general education.
"I think as people become more educated, we're going to find that we're going into more specific topics with them," Sister Johnice said. Students range in age from 17 to 65. While most come from the East Side, social service programs have also recommended people from other places in Erie County to come to the center. Participants in the program go to classes as long as they need to.

There is no timetable or semester at Sister's School. "They work through at the level and pace they're able to be educated at," Sister Johnice said. "Sometimes they have to learn for a few days on the same page. It's an ongoing think until they complete it at the level at which they're learning."

However, the program faces problems in the near future with the budget crisis in Erie County. The Response To Love Center's funding has been cut from $55,000 to $9,000 recently. The center partnered with the Broadway Market during Holy Week in March to receive patron donations.

"We asked people to make up the money we have lost," Sister Johnice said. "A lot of people have come forward (with donations). We really have to plan on turning to the community and saying, ' We don't want the whine about it, but we need your help."

Despite some hardships, Sister Johnice said "Sister's School is a program well worth working for." When you see the people come in not knowing how to read or write, when they complete the GED or are here learning, there's such a sense of accomplishment, building up of their self- esteem and affirmation of their character," Sister Johnice said. "It brings a sense of pride to them, and that's what we're here for. (We're) here to educate them and make a difference in their lives, and while they've lost previous years, we want them to know that they're still good people."
